This place is great.  It’s a restored old west hotel. It’s directly across from the Cumbres  & Toltec Railroad.  The room was very clean and  the staff was friendly.

HOTEL: We stayed almost 3 weeks and got to know it well. I appreciate the hard work and money spent on restoring this hotel so much. It is like stepping back in time, and if that's what you're looking for, you should be happy. The floors are slanted, the doors don't match their frames, and you can depend on the shower suddenly getting way too hot or way too cold while you're in there, but it's all part of the charm! And to their credit, there is one modern element - TVs that do a remarkably good job of streaming whatever you want to watch. We brought our own fan, more as a white-noise-maker than for cooling, and were glad we did.

RESTAURANT: Worst service ever, and I mean that literally. On our way in, I noticed that the employees tending the bar were serving themselves, but even that doesn't explain the absolute fiasco that was our service. A young man took our drink orders; they never came. He took our food orders; they never came either. After maybe 45 minutes, we flagged someone down so we could at least get drinks and ask about the food. Maybe 45 minutes after that, they brought out some food. About half the orders brought for our party were wrong, including mine. It was another half-hour before everyone actually had what they'd ordered. Several other parties had come, eaten, and gone while we waited. For us, it was a 3+ hour meal. The manager did apologize and gave us a small discount. We weren't really angry about it, but neither did we eat there again during our long stay.

As for the food: I like their enchiladas and would get them again. The Green Chili Posole is "something different"; I had it as an experiment and probably won't order it again.

Charming cafe with superb sandwiches with French dip with au jus  and tasty chips and salsa -  enjoy sitting outdoors on the porch;  chat with Continental Divide trail walkers stopping in to resupply. Trains across the street - not open that day.

We decided to eat here after a hike on part of the CDT trail which is between Ghost Ranch and Chama.  The food was excellent.  Well prepared and flavorful.  I had the Train Robber and my spouse the Fig panini.  Our server, Bailey was great and shared a bunch of information about the hotel and the area.  We also got a tour of the place and saw a couple rooms.  Beautifully decorated.  If you are looking for a place to stay and eat in Chama put the Iron Rail Inn at the top of your list!
